Is it bad to let dog sleep on bed with me?

I have a doberman puppy, every night it would sleep on bed at my foot. Is it bad to let them sleep in your bed with you?





My bf have four dogs and they all sleep in his queen size bed with him. Whenever I'm at his house, I, my bf, and all of our dogs would sleep in same bed together. He's one who have most well behaved dogs I know of and help me out with my puppy most.





But few people told me it's bad because the dog will end up try to challenge me.





Who should I listen to?

Is it bad to let dog sleep on bed with me?
I think like some on here, it only matters if you want him to sleep in bed with you all the time. Meaning when he gets bigger are you still going to want him in the bed with you? Right now you are conditioning (teaching) your dog it is okay to sleep in the bed, if you continue and then decide to not let him, he will not understand and thus making it harder to break the habit. Your dog will challenge you but not in a physical way but more mental one. It can be very frustrating trying to break a learned behavior in a dog. I would say, do to the breed of dog, you want to get him use to sleeping on the floor next to the bed. The other posts about the dog attacking you or it being unhygienic is crap! Your only worry should be do want to deal with your dog wanting to jump in bed with you when he is full grown. Good luck.
Reply:I say there is nothing at all wrong with wanting to snuggle with your pooch I have a english bulldog that is about 65 pounds and she has slept with me and my husband since she was big enough to get off of the bed by herself and she is 7 years old now I have never had any problems with it.
Reply:We had our Cocker Spaniel sleep in our bed his whole life. It didn't effect his personality at all. But it was kind of a pain for us. He was a bed-hog. Now we have a new puppy and we are NOT letting him sleep in our bed. It would be kind of cute now but if you start it'll be hard to stop. He sleeps in a kennel right next to our bed.


It's more a personal preference...whatever you're comfortable with. I'm relieved that this time around we're not going to do it.

it's in teh training and remember your pup will get big you may need to get a King bed (haha) I have my great dane and my standard poodle sleep with me


it's what you do and train now. sounds like the ones warning you are the ones who believe dobbies can't be trusted it's in the training and love you give.

Reply:I dont think that there is anything wrong with that. But, if you arent going to want him in the bed with you when hes full grown, I would suggest teaching him to sleep somewhere else (like in a crate by your bed or on a pillow by your bed) now, so that you dont have to when he is an adult dog. Our 2 APBTs sleep in their crates at night. We have their crates right next to our bed, that way they feel close to us and we still have enough room in our bed! lol!....It is really up to you and what you want to do though. : )
Reply:yes and no.If you train him that the foot of the bed is his place then he will stay there and I don't believe it will challenge you my aunt let her Doberman sleep in her bed for 12 years, never challenged her
Reply:My dogs are sleeping with me ( 3 - pug mix with Boston terrier, Dachshund and Doberman Pincher). But your dog is going to get bigger. It is all up to you. If your dog is clean so go for it. And they keep you warm in the winter. Listen to yourself you must make the right decision here. If you are not comfortable buy a doggie bed for your dog and try to teach him to sleep in his own bed next to yours. Good luck
Reply:If your puppy grows up with the dogs that sleep on your bf's bed, he should grow up to be just as well behaved. Also people say dogs will challenge you to if you let them sit in you lap a lot, but I held my doggy all the time when she was a puppy and she has never challenged me.





She still trys to sit in my lap even tough she weighs 67 lbs, but she has never challenged me.
Reply:well i think it is a great way for you and your puppy to start a relationship but if it doesn't want to jump up on the bed dont keep encouraging it its not a terrible thing to do but the hair factor is still there. whatever you do, DO NOT let it sleep IN the bed with you! If you all ready have consult a doctor immediately! ( u could get worms)
Reply:I have a 110 lb Rottie that sleeps with my boyfriend, cat, and me. He has a nice little "nest" between us by our feet and when my boyfriend leave for work he will snuggle by my belly. Some dogs feel more secure sleeping in bed and others may prefer to sleep next to an A/C vent or on cool tile floor.Some might say it's dirty but I take showers in the morning and change my sheets every week like a normal person and I haven't had any problems. Others may say it will make him aggressive but that is all in how you raise him. Sleeping with them gives you good rapport with your dog and as long as you establish yourself as at pack leader your puppy shouldn't give you any problems. It's nice in the winter because I can tuck my toes under him and keep them nice and warm. I would say if your dog wants to sleep on the bed it's okay and if not let him find his own comfy little place.
Reply:It's true and not true. It depends on what you want.





Pro: The dog will feel safe and secure. It will feel human warmth and feel comfortable. It also will like to make you happy by snuggling up to you. However, there are the cons...





Con: It may become quite aggressive. It was heard that once, a lady took sleeping pills and woke up in the morning with blood running down her face. It was her dog that had ripped off her face. It was scary. The dog was probably hungry.





Anyway, it depends on what you want, and how you trust the dog. =]
Reply:OK a lot of this, don't let him on the bed, kind of advice is based on the pack alpha gets the good sleeping place concept. This also is some of the same basis of advice to alwayss go through a door first, alway eat before feeding the dog ect.. EVERY darn one of those are violated daily by folks who have no problem holding the alpha position. Alpha dogs sometimes don't insist on some authority things that are not important to them too - my alpha female lets my sisters dogs have all the toys, but woe to them if they take the piece of furniture she wants! However for an ineffective person who has problems asserting authority these little things may make the difference between the keeping any authority or having the dog get complatly out of control.


So my advice is go ahead let him sleep with you but DO take a basic obedience class (and practice with him from time to time all his life) - hard to claim you are the boss when sitting %26amp; downing to someone else orders! Even tricks like shake %26amp; roll over will help...

Reply:I don't think there is anything wrong with it but you need to look into the future. Your small, cute little puppy will eventually turn out to be a big dog and eventually, you might not want the dog sleeping on your bed anymore. I think it's okay to let your pup in your room but maybe get a crate or his own special dog bed right next to yours.

Reply:If your dog is use to sleeping in the bed with you then you are probably not going to get him to quit without the whining and crying. I have two chihuahuas that sleep in my bed. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you are OK with it.
Reply:Of course it's bad. If nothing else, it's extremely unhygenic. Do you bathe your dogs before bed every night? If not, then it's a definite no-no
Reply:If it was me id put him off now becuase when he gets bigger he will need more room on the bed and will take over the bed and may even attack you
