I was watching this film last night about Elizabeth I - the Golden Age (or whatever the title was) and they had Mary Queen of Scots talking with a Glasgow accent -"see yoo Jimm'e". But my girlfriend stood up in a rage and ranted "this film is f*cking ridiculous... Mary was French, brought up in France, how can they have her speaking like Jimmy Boyle ?"
Mary Queen of Scots - French ? Scottish ? or some other language ?
Mary Queen of Scots - Parlez-Vous Français?
Here you go pdr.

The most likely scenario is that her first language was in fact French, it is common knowledge that most of the Monarchy and Nobility spoke French as a matter of course.
Reply:Mary, Queen of Scots was the daughter of James V %26amp; Mary of Guise. During the Rough Wooing when Henry VIII of England invaded Scotland %26amp; tried to use force to get James to marry of the young Mary to him, she was sent to France for her own safety. There she married the young French Prince, who later became King of Frace but died at a tragically young age.
Given that most of her early years were spent in France she spoke French fluently %26amp; probably did speak with a French accent, but she was Scots through %26amp; through.
So your girlfriend is a little incorrect. I wouldn't want to see Elizabeth I - the Golden Age anyway. For a start she wasn't Elizabeth I of Scotland, the current monarch bearing the name Elizabeth is.
Reply:she was Scottish but married a French king
Reply:Born in Scotland (Linlithgow Palace, just down the road from me) and raised predominantly in France from the age of five. So it's highly unlikely she'd have spoken with Glaswegian accent (I said the same about the kid playing young William Wallace at the start of Braveheart.... another film that cheerfully rewrote history a little more 'Hollywood....' but it's very likely she could speak English. Probably Latin as well.
Nah, the most ridiculous thing in that film is worse than that. Elizabeth on the cliffs in a suit of armour delivering a rousing speech. Did that happen in the real world? Did it f*ck. Most of the rest of it is conjecture as well, but at least most of the major facts were correct.
Reply:The producers of these programmes/films never spoil a good story by the facts!
Reply:she wis scottish jimmy, you're better sticking tae yer maccan questions.
Reply:Was her head attached to her body at that particular time, cos I heard she lost it at some point. I gather that might have had an affect on the accent.
Reply:She was Scottish but spent her time in the French Court.
French speaking.
Married the Dauphin.
Reply:scottish but married a french king... most royalty like her spoke french at the time though :):):) hope this helped :D
Reply:She was a Scot but lived in France for many years and like most royalty of the time spoke fluent french.
Reply:Mary was Scottish but she was sent at a young age to France to live with the French court. She would have spoken with a Scottish accent.
Reply:Michael Portillo was Spanish but he spoke better English that most English people.
Reply:She was sent to France at the age of five and lived there until her husband died when she was 19. I think it's very likely she would have spoken with a french accent, but like most royals at the time would have spoken at the least french, english and latin fluently.
Reply:She spoke French as did most of the court.
