How long a life span does an ant have? How does the Queen get replaced? etc?

Im intrigued by ants for some reason.

So how long do they live for?

Where does the Queen come from and how is she replaced?

How do they communicate?

Do they work at night aswell? If not what do they do? I doubt they sleep.

I have no idea about ants but I'm facisnated by them, answers and links would be appreciated.

Cheers

i can tell you:

1) An ant's life span is normally only about 90 days. Harvester ants seem to live a little longer, usually 2 to 6 months. We had a case where the ants lasted a whole year but that is exceptional. They are small insects and do not have a long life expectancy.

2) Ants will eat almost anything but their favorites are fresh vegetables and fruits such as cucumber, lettuce, apple, celery, or broccoli. Feed them tiny pieces every other day as needed. You may also want to try small bits of grains, or granola.

3) Ants with wings are either female or male ants which have not reached maturity yet. At a certain time each year the mature males and females fly into the air to mate. After mating they lose their wings. The male dies. The female searches for a place to start a new colony as a fertile queen.

4) Ants are social insects, which means they live in large colonies or groups. Some colonies consist of millions of ants. There are three types of ants in each species, the queen, the sterile female workers, and males. The male ants only serve one purpose, to mate with future queen ants and do not live very long. The queen grows to adulthood, mates, and then spends the rest of her life laying eggs. A colony may have only one queen, or there may be many queens depending on the species. Ants go through four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

5) Communication: If you watch ants for any length of time you will see that they really do communicate with each other and very effectively too. Ants communicate by touching each other with their antennae. Ants also use chemicals called pheromones to leave scent trails for other ants to follow

6) The queen ant's only job is to lay eggs. It's everybody's mother. Someday it will lay another queen just like her. The life span of a queen ant is approximately 10 years
Reply:Workers live about 90 days, they communicate with their antennae, look up the rest at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ants
Reply:it depends on how fast a human can squish it lol
Reply:As long as before you step on them.
