What do you think of Queen covers?

Why do people insist on trying to pull off Queen songs? It's just wrong! Take last night for instance I was out having a few drinks with a friend and my all time favourite song came on - Don't Stop Me Now - sung by MCFLY! WTF?

Am I on my own here? there are certain people that you just dont try and rip of - like Madonna - it's never going to be as good as the original so just don't do it!

What do you think of Queen covers?
Most people will know the songs, I myself grew up listening to them. So no matter how obscure the band are everyone will know the lyrics. Hence people will sing along and be tempted to buy it. Good call on the McFly, I know it was for charity but Fredie will be turning in his grave.
Reply:Some covers can be passable, but then there are the right cr@p covers. Then again it may encourage people to listen to the original and then realise how bad a lot of covers are.
Reply:in a way its a tribute to Freddie mercury and queen that these songs can be covered and still be hits and the fact that young groups like mcfly cover these is keeping their music alive and makes them credible to the younger listeners
Reply:they can try as hard as they want to cover any song, but the best are the origs with Freddi
Reply:Im with you 100 per cent theres hundreds of songs that other

groups should keep there voices off has they are not good enough to cover them.
Reply:I hate any cover of any song, people these days are just too lazy to write their own material and just want to get rich by singing other peoples songs.
Reply:dont kno
Reply:The thing with cover versions of Queen songs is that nobody will ever be able to beat Queen at their own game, that is to say no pop or rock band will be able to do the same songs in a similar style as well as the originals were done.

In have heard a lot of Queen cover versions and the only ones that are good are ones where they take a Queen song and do it in a different way, like the reggae version of breakthru which is good as it is not just a poor copy of the original but a re-working, and by a similar token the version of Bohemian Rhapsody played on the violin by Lucia Micharelli is just magnificent because it does not attempt to copy but instead ininterpret the original to provoke a different reaction.

There is nothing wrong with covering a classic song so long as you add something new and valid. I don't think it is really ever good just to attempt to remake the same song or film someone else has already done, to have any merit you have to make something different from it. For example, the Cardigans did some Black Sabbath covers - they were not at all heavy metal and were pretty decent (not as much my taste as the originals) and a valid and worthwhile project to have done.

I can see why specific cover bands like the Bootleg Beatles (a Beatles coverband), or the Wall (a Pink Floyd cover band) are popular as they are basically as close as you can usually get to seeing the originals live, but live music is very different than CD's and radio play.

So in short I totally agree with the principle that there is no point just copying a song someone else has done, especially if you are not going to do it that well!
Reply:Ah, it's just a lazy way for bands to get a hit.

There should be a law that musicians are not allowed to cover the Beatles, Motown, etc. Just like you said: it will never be as good as the original.
Reply:I don't know but I did actually think that the Flaming Lips rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" was actually really good.

It's call paying tribute darlin'. Queen was a really influencial band and other's who cover their songs are only paying tribute to their genius and popularity.

Yea, some covers really do stink, but not all. Try to keep an open mind.
Reply:Yeah i know what you mean because on my 18th birthday i went clubbing for the first time while dancing to cheesy dance songs i heard baywatch i was shocked when it was a remix from some **** people with a band name like "sunblock" i just sat down angry and watched people dance... i was like Great.... another song has been ruined!!

Also when you watch pop idol or x-factor when they sing some of the greatest songs ever and it gets ruined by tone death bastards who think they are going to get far on a programme called X-Factor.... haha they haven't entered the real world...
Reply:listen to Fatbottom Girls by Hayseed Dixie and i think you will change your tune
